Financial Independence? What, Why, When

What is financial independence? Why you need to achieve it? And when is the right time to start? Here are my $0.02 on the philosophical aspects of financial independence.

What is financial independence?

Imagine this: Netflix binging on a Tuesday afternoon, guilt-free. Weekend trips whenever the wanderlust hits. Saying “nah” to that soul-crushing job you hate. Sounds pretty sweet, right?

But hold on, before you start picturing mansions and private jets (although, it sounds good!), FI isn’t about becoming a millionaire overnight. It’s about having enough passive income (think investments, side hustles, rental properties) to cover your living expenses, without relying on a paycheck. Basically, you become your own boss, and your money works for you, not the other way around.

For me, it’s about freedom and flexibility to pursue passions, travel, or simply relax without financial worries.

Reaching FI is a journey, not a destination. It requires planning, discipline, and smart financial choices. Start by tracking expenses, paying off debt, and investing early. Explore ways to increase your income and keep searching to decrease expenses.

Some people want to retire early (FIRE movement), while others just want the flexibility to pursue passions. The ideal picture of what your financial independence looks like depends on you. Remember, FI is about empowering yourself to design a life you love, not about a specific dollar amount or timeline.

Why Achieve Financial Independence?

There are several reasons why I want to be financial independent:

  1. Freedom and Flexibility: FI is about having the choice to pursue your passions and interests, whether that’s starting a business, traveling the world, spending more time with loved ones, or simply pursuing hobbies you wouldn’t otherwise have the time or resources for. It frees you from the constraints of a traditional job and allows you to design a life that aligns with your values and priorities.
  2. Reduced Stress and Increased Peace of Mind: Financial worries are a major source of stress for many people. With FI, you have the security of knowing your living expenses are covered, even if you face unexpected job loss or health issues. This can lead to a significant reduction in stress and anxiety, allowing you to focus on what truly matters in life.
  3. Increased Security and Control: Unexpected events happen. Having a solid financial foundation allows you to weather storms without jeopardizing your well-being. FI can also give you the freedom to take calculated risks without fear of financial ruin, potentially opening up new opportunities.
  4. Early Retirement (for some people, not all): Some people pursue FI specifically to retire early and enjoy their golden years without relying on a traditional pension or Social Security. This allows them to spend more time with family, travel, or pursue hobbies they wouldn’t have the time for during their working years. This applies to those who are of course still young. Many of us are waking up to this in our late forties and fifties… well, for us, the “early” is not that early.
  5. Leaving a Legacy: Financial independence can give you the ability to support loved ones, donate to causes you care about, or establish a foundation for future generations. This can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment beyond your own personal needs. This resonates with me a lot. I was a finance major in school and I went on to work for banks. But, I only realized the true meaning of finance later in life. I hope to bring more awareness to younger generations, including my own son. I hope my son will see this sooner than I did.

FI isn’t just about money; it’s about empowerment and choice. It’s about creating a life that aligns with your values and allows you to thrive. Whether it’s your ultimate goal or not, the potential benefits are “priceless” and can help you build a secure and fulfilling future.

Are you living your own life?

Most people do not live their own lives. They live someone else’s. Working for someone else, making money for someone else, burning your creative calories and your prime years for someone else.

Your job doesn’t have to be your life. For some people, it is, and that’s fine. But, if it isn’t for you, then don’t feel guilty, not everyone has been blessed with a job they love. And not everyone is willing to give their life for their job.

So, what is your why?

If you didn’t have to work to pay for your expenses, how do you want to live your life? I am curious, leave your comments below.

When Should You Start?

Right now!

It’s time you break free from the loop. And no matter how old or how young you are, there’s never the right time. You said tomorrow yesterday. You need to make that someday today.

Just get started today.

The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to achieve your dreams. And financial independence is not really about money. It is about time. Time is the most precious asset you have. You want to make sure that you are not trading your precious time for just paying your bills and having some disposable income.

It is about being able to do what you want to do with the limited time that you have in this world.

Don’t put this off.

You will not have the same level of energy tomorrow as you do today. Your motivation, your health will dissipate over time. Sorry, but true. Your excuses will continue to evolve. And putting things off til tomorrow will seem like a reasonable excuse. But, don’t fall for it.

Start now.

Do something today to take steps towards your financial independence.
