Are you working at a 9 to 5 office job? And you don’t know what else is out there besides getting your monthly paycheck? Let me guess, for too long, you kept trying to climb the corporate ladder but, you are still stuck somewhere in the middle. And now you are getting older and starting to feel like this may be the end.
And to make things worse, you realize the salary you rely on for survival is never going to get big enough for you to live your dream. Nope. Hopefully they are passive streams of income that you can continue to generate well past your retirement. Does that resonate? OK, read on, this post is for you.
As a corporate 9-to-5’er myself, I am often consumed by demanding work and tight schedules. At work, I am constantly interrupted by urgent issues and tasks. Outside of work, I have obligations ranging from house chores to checking in on my aging father to driving my teenage son to his volleyball game.

However, despite all these, I realized I needed to pursue a side hustle and get an alternative source of income so that I would not forever rely on my corporate job. I also wanted to find something that can serve as a creative outlet and personal passion, which is hard to find in corporate jobs.

Benefits of Side Hustling
1. Diversifying Income Streams
If you are solely reliant on your salary, you are exposed to financial risks. A side hustle allows you to mitigate these risks by diversifying your income streams. Whether it be through freelancing, investments, or entrepreneurship, a side hustle provides an additional cushion against economic uncertainties. For me, this is the most important motivation to look into side hustling.
2. Enhancing Skill Sets
By pursuing a side hustle, you can expand your skill sets beyond the realm of your primary profession. Whether it’s learning marketing techniques for a new business venture or gaining project management skills through a creative endeavor, side hustles facilitate continuous learning and personal growth.
3. Unlocking Creativity
Do you often find yourself bound by the constraints of your corporate roles? I certainly do. A side hustle allows you to break free from these constraints, explore your creative interests, and unleash your hidden talents. Painting, writing, or podcasting are just a few examples of side hustles that foster artistic expression.
4. Networking Opportunities
Engaging in a side hustle exposes you to new networks and communities beyond your professional circle. These connections can be leveraged to build personal branding, explore potential collaborations, or even unearth new business opportunities.
Did you know that about 40%1 of working Americans have a side hustle? And the top 5 most popular side hustles2 are:
- Online business (like blogging, podcasting, Youtube, online courses)
- E-commerce (Amazon, Etsy, eBay)
- Investing (including real estate, crypto, stocks and ETFs)
- Self-publishing (KDP, Lulu, BookBaby, Barnes & Nobles)
- Local services (cleaning, notary service, pet sitting, etc.)
Key Considerations
While the idea of a side hustle is enticing, you must consider a few important factors before embarking on your entrepreneurial journey.
1. Time Management
Working in a corporate job, you are often juggling multiple responsibilities and you will have limited spare time. Therefore, finding a side hustle that aligns with your schedule is crucial. Prioritizing and optimizing your time effectively becomes paramount to balancing work, personal life, and the side hustle.
2. Passion and Purpose
Choosing a side hustle solely for financial gains may not bring a sense of fulfillment. So, instead, you should identify your passions and explore side hustles that align with your core values and interests. By the way, I recently read an article from Mark Manson about finding your purpose and broke down the key points in this post here: Finding Your Purpose. But, back to your side hustle: yes, align with your passion and purpose. This ensures your side hustle is enjoyable, sustainable, and contributes to personal growth.
3. Managing Risks
You need to assess the risks associated with your side hustle, especially if it involves financial investments or venturing into a new business. Conducting thorough research, seeking mentorship, and formulating a strategic plan will minimize potential risks and maximize the chances of success.
4. Conflicting Priorities
Doing a side hustle can get you caught in a constant battle of conflicting priorities. The need to excel in your primary career cannot be compromised, as it sustains your financial stability and long-term goals. Simultaneously, the side hustle demands dedication and commitment to ensure its success. Striking the right balance between the two becomes a perennial challenge that requires careful navigation.
5. Fatigue and Burnout
In the quest to manage a side hustle along with a demanding career, fatigue, and burnout become real concerns. The constant pressure of meeting deadlines, working long hours, and constantly being “on” can take a toll on physical and mental well-being. Neglecting self-care becomes a recurring theme, leading to decreased efficiency and potential setbacks in both professional and personal endeavors.

Lucrative Side Hustle Ideas
Now with these considerations in mind, let’s dive into some of the side hustle ideas. The criteria I used to select the best one for me was: Is it passive or active income?
Does it require a large or small upfront investment? Can I start the hustle immediately or does it require long lead/setup time? In summary, below is a diagram of my evaluation. My top three are Investing, Content Creation, and Digital Assets. The others are either too expensive to start immediately or require me to constantly work to earn money.
For example, you will see that Consulting and Coaching/Mentoring require me to be 100% active to earn money. That’s why they are sent to the far left side of the axis. On the other hand, opportunities involving Investing, Digital Assets, and Content Creation can be done without being fully active all the time. Of course, these gigs will require substantial amount of focus and time in the beginning but, most of the time, once you have it setup, your time to maintain it can be minimal.

1. Consulting
You can leverage your expertise by offering consulting services in your respective industry. This allows you to provide guidance and advice to other businesses, thereby capitalizing on your knowledge and earning additional income.
According to Forbes (30 Side Hustle Ideas To Make Extra Money in 2023), one of the best side hustle jobs is freelancing. Freelancers deliver work on a per-project basis for one or more clients and you can schedule it in your spare time.
My personal view on this one is a bit mixed. While I think that it makes sense, I think I would have a hard time finding this kind of gig in my industry. I am working in a highly regulated Banking industry and am mindful of my employment contract. Most employment contracts in my field do not allow having another job. So, make sure to review your employment contract and company policies to understand any restrictions on outside work.
Another reason why I am not so excited about this type of opportunity is because this is yet another money-for-time kind of active income. There are limits to how much you can work in this mode and the minute you stop working, your income will stop. So, in short, I will pass this one and keep looking for other passive income side hustles.
2. Content Creation
If you are a good creator, you can explore opportunities in content creation. Writing articles, blog posts, or even publishing a book can contribute to personal branding and generate passive income.
I think this one is definitely one of the top choices. As an office worker, you may have a lot of knowledge and experience that can be shared via blogs, industry articles, or books. But, here, I want to distinguish between an online content creation vs. offline content creation. You can create content for offline consumption. For example, you can write a traditional book, or write articles on a physical newspaper/magazine. Another option is for online consumption: i.e., blogging, Youtubing, TikToking.
In fact, this blog is basically an online content creation. It allows me to explore my passion and create something of value outside of work. It also has the potential to earn money and generate passive side income.
Later, I will share a detailed post about setting up a blog as your side hustle. I go into things like what the start-up cost is, how much time is really needed, etc. So, if you are thinking about blogging, definitely check it out. Will put a link later.
3. Real Estate Investment
You can invest in rental properties or participate in real estate crowdfunding platforms to diversify your investment portfolio and generate long-term income. If you have some funds or have access to funds for real estate, then this is definitely one of the best passive income ideas. If you are getting a loan, of course, you need to just make sure you do your math in case interest rates go up.
For me, I don’t have so much capital to purchase real estate right now. Also, I am not as familiar with the real estate market. I will need to do some studying before I invest money to purchase a property. So, for me, this is a pass for now. But, with the hope that someday soon, I will get into this and have my own building somewhere.
4. Online Tutoring
You might be able to do online tutoring or mentoring. This allows you to share knowledge, guide aspiring professionals, and earn some good money at the same time.
Since this can be done online, the time commitment and logistics can be quite manageable. However, for now, I do mentoring as a volunteer service through a local charity organization – providing mentoring to underprivileged High School students. I could look into a paid opportunity to make more money but, again, this is not as attractive from a side hustle perspective because of the time-for-money factor (this is an active income – which is basically making money in exchange for your time). I want to focus on building a passive income business. So, I am passing this one for now.
5. E-commerce
You can establish an e-commerce business by utilizing online platforms or creating their own. Selling niche products, drop-shipping, or developing a unique brand offers opportunities for additional income streams.
I like this idea. What they say is that if you want to quickly see your revenue go up, the best side hustle idea is e-commerce. With other side hustle income like blogging, writing e-books, and Youtube, it takes longer to go from start to revenue realization. And selling a physical product of your own. So, my plan is to also pick up e-commerce as a mid-term fun side hustle. So much to do, so little time.
6. Digital Assets (Excel, PPT, Photography, etc.)
If you have a passion for photography or if you can make useful Excel templates, you can monetize these digital assets by selling them online.
I really like the digital assets selling idea. It doesn’t have to be super fancy, and you don’t have to be a guru with industry certifications. For most of us in the corporate world, we have been using PPT and Excel for many years so, if you are good at it, you might have something that can help others. There is an article out there on Medium about someone who made $280K selling spreadsheets on Etsy. Really? 280k? I am definitely trying this. I will post and link shortly.
7. Investing
You can invest in stocks, bonds, or cryptocurrency. Though this requires thorough research and risk management, successful investments can yield significant returns.
This one is another great one. And to make things more “passive”, you can look at dividend stocks. Or dividend ETFs. The upside potential for many of the big dividend stocks may not be there (except for Microsoft which pays decent dividends AND is one of the high-growth stocks) but, it generates a stream of income while you sleep.
Conclusion
Side hustles provide multitude of benefits, ranging from additional income to personal growth opportunities. By carefully considering your time constraints, passions, and potential risks, you can choose a side hustle that aligns with your goals and aspirations.
As for me, I will be pursuing side hustles that are passive and something I can do from home (like blogging, selling digital assets, and investing). Check out the post on 5 Passive Income Side Hustles From Home.
